History/Social Sciences Teacher Licensure Requirements:

Major in Political Science

 
Students majoring in Political Science and seeking teacher licensure in History/Social Sciences must meet the following content and methodology requirements:

Complete an endorsement in American Government:

  • Take POL S 215 and 12 credits from: 241, 251, 305, 306, 310, 344, 357, 358, 359, 360, 361, 371, 381, 385, 406, 410, 413, 420, 421, 433, 453, 464.
  • Earn a minimum grade of C in all content courses used for the endorsement.

Complete one course in World Politics:

Complete a second endorsement in either American or World History:

  • Earn a minimum grade of C in all History courses used for the endorsement.
  • American History: It is recommended that students a mix of courses covering both Pre-1870 and Post-1870 U.S. History.
    • Take HIST 221 and 222, and at least 9 additional credits of approved U.S. History from:
    • Recommended (but not required) courses: 307, 351, 352, 353, 354, 355, 356, 360, 361, 386, 391(X), 450, 451, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466.
    • Other courses that apply: 240, 345, 365, 366, 370, 380, 389, 453, 454, 455, 456, 458, 459, 460, 461, 468, 469, 470, 471, 472, 473, 488, 489.
  • World History: It is recommended that students take a mix of courses covering such areas as Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe.
    • Take HIST 201 and 202 and at least 9 additional credits of approved World History from:
    • Recommended (but not required) courses: 304, 305, 325, 336, 337, 338, 340, 341, 402, 403, 404, 405, 406, 408, 410, 414, 417, 419, 420, 421, 422, 424, 425, 431, 441, 474, 479.
    • Other courses that apply: 207, 245, 280, 281, 323, 339, 374, 376, 383, 388, 390, 427, 428, 429(X), 442.

A minor in History requires at least 15 credits of History, including 9 taken at ISU at the 300+ level.

Complete the following courses while fulfilling the LAS General Education Requirements:

  • ENGL 150 (3 cr. – previously ENGL 104)
  • ENGL 250 (3 cr. – previously ENGL 105)
  • PSYCH 230 (3 cr.)
  • MATH or STAT (3 cr.) from Human Sciences approved list. See: www.teacher.hs.iastate.edu/generaleducation.php
  • Natural Science (6 cr.) from Human Sciences approved list. See: www.teacher.hs.iastate.edu/generaleducation.php
  • SP CM 212, SP CM 313, or THTRE 358 (3cr.)
  • HIST 201 (3 cr.)
  • HIST 202 (3 cr.)
  • HIST 221 (3 cr.)
  • HIST 222 (3 cr.)
  • Participate in an international experience, including international student teaching, course-related travel abroad, or volunteer work with an international program on campus.

Complete the Professional Education Courses in Curriculum and Instruction (C I) and apply for admission to the University Teacher Education Program (UTEP):

Prior to applying for UTEP admission, complete the following:

  • Maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.5 or higher.
  • Earn a minimum grade of C in all C I, SP ED, or HD FS courses.
  • C I 202 (3 cr. – previously C I 201)
  • C I 204 (3 cr.)
  • C I 280L (0.5 cr.): Prerequisite for admission to UTEP.
  • C I 219 (R cr.): Taken with C I 280L.
  • Take the Praxis I (PPST) Exam. For information, see: www.teacher.hs.iastate.edu/praxis.php
  • Apply for admission to the University Teacher Education Program (UTEP) at least two semesters prior to student teaching. For information, see: www.teacher.hs.iastate.edu/admission.php

Following UTEP Admission, complete the following Professional Courses:

  • C I 280A (1 cr.)
  • C I 333 (3 cr.)
  • SP ED 450 (3 cr.)
  • C I 406 (3 cr.)
  • C I 426 (3 cr.)
  • C I 480A (1 cr.): Taken in conjunction with C I 426.
  • C I 415 (R. cr.): Taken in conjunction with C I 426.
  • C I 496 (3 cr.)
  • C I 480A (1 cr.): Taken in conjunction with C I 496.
  • C I 417A (16 cr.): Student Teaching (normally completed one's last semester).

Complete any and all additional courses to meet remaining College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Department of Political Science requirements for a bachelor's degree in Political Science. See Department of Political Science for details.
